Setting Data Hierarchy in Pivot Tables

A hierarchy is an arrangement of category columns that is based on the parent-child relationships. Pivot tables allow users to customize the hierarchy of its data based on levels.

Expanding Data Parameters

Pivot Table Expand

Table expand allows users to hone in on data by level of hierarchy without hiding the first level of items and their corresponding data. Using the table above, a user may expand upon a single “Level 1” item to the second level.

Expand

  1. Hovering over the caret icon to the right of the item name, the “Expand” bubble will appear. Click the caret icon.
  2. Once clicked, the table will reveal the results with “Level 2 Item”.

Collapse

  1. Hovering over the caret icon to the left of the item name, the “Collapse” bubble will appear. Click the caret icon.
  2. Once clicked, the “Level 2 Item” will disappear.

Drilling into Item Details

Pivot Table Drill

Table drill allows users to hone in on data by level of hierarchy. Using the table above, a user may drill down to the second level by hovering over a hyperlinked item name under the “Level 1 Item” column.

Visual Drill

Visual drill allows users to hone in on visual data by level of hierarchy. A user may drill into a single “Level 1” item to the second level by double-clicking a piece of a graph or the hyperlinked label.
